The patient will still be able to move their bowels and can avoid a colostomy bag.
Abdominoperineal Resection — This procedure is required for patients who have cancerous cells in the lowest portion of the rectum. The entire rectum must be removed in order to complete the procedure, and patients will have to use a colostomy bag after the operation.
Colectomy — This surgical procedure is designed for patients who are suffering from colon cancer, diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease. During this operation, the diseased portion of the colon is removed.
